Counter-Changing

When the field is divided into two colors and the charges on it are colored in the opposite color, they are said to be counter-changed or counter-coloured:

Per pale argent and vert, a bend counter-changed
Per pale vert and argent, three chevronels counter-changed
Quarterly argent and azure, a cross counter-changed

Per fess gules and argent, three fleur-de-lys counter-changed
Per pale argent and purpure, a lion rampant counter-changed

A complete list of all the possible charges and their ornamentation is beyond the scope of this Primer. For additional information, consult our online references.
